MARCEL GÄHLER
Biography
Marcel Gähler was born in Zurich in 1969 and lives and works in Winterthur. He studied from 1990 to 1996 at Zurich University of the Arts. Study residency in 2013 at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. In addition to individual and group exhibitions in Basel, Bern, Boston, Brussels, Geneva, London, New York, Paris, Philadelphia and Zurich, among other places, he has participated in international art fairs in Basel, London, Miami, New York, Paris and Seoul. Marcel Gähler works primarily in the medium of drawing. The innovative approach also refers to the relationship with photography and the way in which this is made useful for experiencing the world in a different way and for the artistic transformation into the medium of drawing. The elaborate process includes several intermediate stages, ending in the graphite drawing. The artist gains extraordinary possibilities from it regarding the reproduction of the reality he has already conveyed. The continuum of the dense line structure, the grey tones and gradations leads to a homogeneous pictorial appearance and constitutes its own visual reality. „In many ways his drawings touch on things that are universal but nearly impossible to express verbally, distant memories, emotions, deep feelings or love or loss. – A kind of longing for something deep within.“ (Rebecca Kerlin, Philadelphia)
